Uses of Platinum

Platinum is a dense and gray-white precious metal which is both malleable and ductile, and is considered as one of the rarest metal on the Earth.  It is generally very uncreative and belongs to the platinum group of metals and is also known as a noble metal, as it does not corrode easily. It has various industrial uses and is also used in jewelry.  It is mainly used in catalytic converters, electrodes, electrical contacts and so on.  The price of platinum is rather high as it is a very rare and valuable major precious metal.

Platinum has a number of qualities, such as its purity and versatility.  It is used in diamond jewelry as it is a naturally white metal and so will not cast any of its color on the diamond.  It is usually 95% pure and therefore does not tarnish or fade and keeps its luster throughout its lifetime.  It is also ideal for people who have sensitive skin.    It also does not wear away and hence the precious stones in the jewelry are held firmly and securely.

Changes in Platinum pricing

Normally, during an economic stable period, the price of platinum is almost twice the price of gold, but during periods of economic turbulence, the price might come down, as industrial demand decreases and this makes it fall below the price of gold.  Therefore, the prices fluctuate quite a bit and are not as stable as gold, as gold is considered a safe bet during economic recession.  Moreover, gold price is not driven by industrial demand.

Investing in Platinum

The price of platinum and its value makes it a good investment choice.  It is also available in an internationally standard form and purity and is quite compact for storing as well as transporting.  You can buy and keep it as a valuable metal for a long time, and there are a number of different retail investment products.  For instance, you can invest in platinum bars and coins. These have been produced in various refineries in the US and in Europe in different weights up to 32.15 troy oz.  The Royal Canadian Mint, the Perth Mint and the United States Mint have also issued platinum bullion coins as well as collectors coins.  There are a number of smaller mints that have issued platinum coins.  You can buy these coins and bars, after knowing the price of platinum, from the various coin dealers as well as platinum distributors.

The investment demand for platinum as at its all-time high in the 1080s, as there were some concerns regarding the platinum supplies at the time from South Africa, which is the main region producing platinum.
